Introduction

I've recently taken up short mat bowls myself following a house move to a part of the country where it's a popular pastime in many local villages, and although my knowledge of the flat green game is proving of some benefit, short mat provides a very different and demanding challenge. From a personal point of view the introduction of the two instructional books came at an opportune time and I welcome their availability.

Basic Skills Exercises
Incongruously hidden away in the ESMBA website are two pages that merit a higher profile and are well worth a visit. The first page shows diagrams for 16 different skills exercises that cover virtually every shot likely to be encountered in the game, from the basic draw to reverse bias, while the second page provides a detailed explanation and suggested points scoring system for each exercise.
