Synopsis Zoo Lake, Johannesburg, provided the setting for the Third World Bowls Championships from 18 February to 6 March, 1976. Sixteen countries competed in singles, pairs, triples and fours, with the Leonard Trophy being awarded to the country gaining the most points in the four competitions - two points being awarded for a win and one for a tie in all matches except singles where the winner received one point. The event proved to be an outstanding success for the home nation with their bowlers making a clean sweep of all four events, their team thereby taking the Leonard Trophy with maximum points.

This lavishly produced and well-illustrated commemorative book was published in advance of the championships and, apart from providing a detailed daily programme of events, has a considerable amount of fascinating reading including:

  • Messages from the Prime Minister (Mr B J Vorster) and the Minister of Sport and Recreation (Dr P G J Koornhof)
  • Photographs and descriptions of the trophies and medals
  • Messages, with photographs, from leading international officials
  • Photographs and personal backgrounds of officials of the local organising committees
  • Photographs and personal backgrounds of the team managers and players of the participating teams
  • Pictures of the identifying colours and flags of each team
  • Conditions of play and the laws of the game
